DAY 3 – HIKING WEEK – PONTA SÃO LOURENÇO

On day 3 of our EPIC Hiking Week, we went to Ponta de São Lourenço. It’s also one of our favourite places since we usually go there to do climbing tours or our famous coasteering. The environment is completely different from everything else on the island.

This area is a natural reserve. Its path goes along the volcanic São Lourenço peninsula and has 8 km of extension with the highest altitude being 110 m and the lowest is sea level.

The vegetation here also has many endemic species, but no trees due to the arid climate and the predominant trade winds.

It’s an exceptional location to see the local fauna, especially the marine birds. If we’re fortunate enough, we can see the world’s rarest seal, the monk seal (Monachus monachus).

If this isn’t enough to make you want to go there, before the return, there’s an awesome place that you can have a dive in the clear waters of the Atlantic ocean.
